10 Fashion Tips for Tall Men: Helping the Extra Not Your Ordinary Male Look Good

If you’re over 6ft tall, you already know the deal—standing out is easy, but finding clothes? That’s a whole different story. The agony of finding clothes is one matter, while styling is another. At B. Love, our slogan, “Dressing the extra, not your ordinary male,” is what drives us in designing relaxed apparel catered to tall men, not just for the fit but also for the look. Here are 10 fashion tips to consider on your journey and how B. Love Tall Menswear can contribute.
1. Get the pant length right
There’s nothing worse than pants that leave you high and dry—literally. Fashion critics would say, “Pants should break mid-ankle for the proper appearance.” Due to height, this can pose a problem for tall men, as what's readily available doesn’t often work out this way. Meanwhile, the discrepancy with inseam measurements from one brand to another is another cause for concern. “What's listed as a 36” inseam here is not really a 36” inseam with another brand.” Whether your inseam measurements are 34”, 36”, 38”, or even 40” inseam, spend the time finding the brand that offers the pant length that won't have your ankles exposed to the air or overly draped.
2. It all began with the basics
It's OK to start off with the basics, such as regular t-shirts in tops and relaxed pants in bottoms. Focus on your day-to-day activities. If you live an active lifestyle yet enjoy spending time with friends, consider a form-fitting shirt along with pants that can be worn in a variety of settings. For those in office settings, consider the same but with athletic-fitting pants over relaxed fit. Though minimal in appearance, having a combination of these basic essentials will eventually lead to a wardrobe that's not so basic.
3. Don’t be afraid of patterns
At the risk of standing out more, still consider patterns for your wardrobe. Lookastic suggests, “Patterns worn should focus on matching colors rather than prints.” Start with one go-to pattern, either in full or partial, on a piece of clothing and match one of the colors of that pattern to the secondary piece of clothing. A floral-patterned t-shirt with red, sky blue, and forest green can be paired with pants in any of those colorways to bring balance.

4. It's OK to be a repeat Offender
In clothing, that is! If you find a style you like and that is comfortable, don't be afraid to wear it on repeat in various colorways, of course. Steve Jobs owned a style (stone-washed jeans and a black turtleneck), and it was on repeat for years. Nothing wrong with that, but a different color top or different color bottom could have spiced the look a little more. If a V-neck tee and jogger pants are your style, consider re-wearing in different colorways.
5. Embrace both the neutral and the assertive
By default, neutral colors will fill out closets - black, grey, white, khaki, navy, and olive. These provide a safe visual appearance, but don't cheat the color palette and shy away from the brighter hues - orange, royal, pink, salmon, and lime. Though these assertive colors draw some focus, pairing these hues together is a delight with little to no clash. The orange color palette, which includes the color sherbert, pairs well with light blue. Now envision that combination with shorts and a shirt.
6. Don’t cost an arm and leg to look fly
Whether made by Thom Browne or Gucci, made in the U.S. or imported, looking good shouldn’t drain your pockets (at the same time, it shouldn’t cost you pennies) - Vogue [right price for fashion]
More fabric often means more costs to the buyer, since more fabric is required to construct clothes for the tall, the price point for designs offered can tip the scale in comparison to the norm. Search the market for the apparel that makes up the style you like and compare costs. Sweatpants shouldn’t cost $100 but shouldn't go for $8 either. Believe it or not, there are options (though still a few) out there that can offer that happy median in costs.
7. Word of mouth
Fashion for the tall is still limited, so when you see someone at eye level that owns a style that you like, don't be afraid to ask about it. Consider it networking but about clothes.
“I am approached often when others around my height see the apparel that I am wearing, and I have no issues pointing them to the brand, for I know the struggle is real.” - Christopher Solomon, Washington, DC
8. Know the trends
With the recent pandemic, the increase in remote work effectively re-birthed the athleisure trend, and clothing fitting this trend was severely lacking for tall men. While some improvements have been made since then, additional offerings are needed. With working from home still being preferred, look for apparel that fits this trend. Jogger pants, hoodies, and fine t-shirts - all items built on this trend. Which one works for you?
9. Accessorize
Fashion and accessories go hand in hand, like a beverage to food. Not required but equally important. Accessories not only complete the whole look but also complement the outfit. A fitness tracker, ala smart watch (which can be purchased with multiple colored bands), not only is cool but, paired with fitted athletic pants or shorts and crew t-shirt or henley, displays someone who cares for their health while looking good.
10. Confidence is key
“If you love something, wear it all the time. Find things that suit you. That’s how you look extraordinary.”- Vivienne Westwood
Knowing that you look good no matter what you wear and how often you wear it helps build confidence because it expresses YOU. Step out in what you like and see how it makes you feel.
